Topic - ADHD and childbirth

Hormones affect everything and when you’re pregnant and have ADHD, managing the symptoms is a struggle especially if you’re told to stop taking your medication.  Hormones are in tremendous flux during pregnancy, mostly because the placenta produces its own hormones and causes the thyroid and adrenal glands to produce more than their usual amount.  Hormone levels rise in the first months of pregnancy resulting in mood swings, fatigue and anxiety. But as estrogen rises, many women feel that their ADHD improves. After delivery, hormones drop and the “baby blues” can set in.  Women with ADHD are more prone to postpartum depression. Talk with your doctor about taking your meds during pregnancy and nursing. Some stimulants may cause heart defects in baby. Get the support you need to balance work and motherhood while you adjust to your new life.
