Did his favorite uncle just give your kid a drum set for his birthday? That’s great. Playing the drums will change his brain structure. The motor areas of his brain will be organized more efficiently than any other member of the band or anyone else for that matter. Your son will have fewer, but thicker, connecting fibers between the two halves of his brain, thereby increasing the speed of messages. This explains why drummers are able to coordinate their hand movements on both sides of the brain that are impossible for non-musicians. When he’s performing other kinds of motor tasks, his brain will be less active than other people’s because he doesn’t need to use much energy. Sure, you’re gonna lose your mind with all of the noise, but remember that your son’s rock and roll neurology just may make him a great surgeon one day.
