Topic - The eyes are the windows to our brain health
The eyes are the windows to our soul, but they also allow us to peek in on our brain health. The latest research in detecting the very early stages of Parkinson’s disease reveals that the thinning of the retina, which are the nerve cells at the back of the eye, can be the first sign of the condition. Thinning of the retina may cause a decrease in brain cells that produce dopamine. Dopamine has several jobs in the body. It’s associated with pleasure and reward, but it also plays a major role in controlling movement. The thinner the retina, the greater the severity of the Parkinson’s symptoms which cripple all movement skills and leads to dementia, psychosis, and death. The discovery of this connection means that neurologists may, in the future, be able to detect Parkinson’s disease with a simple eye scan. We love how the future of science is looking!
