Topic - Nightmares tell us what’s going wrong

If you’re having more bad dreams and nightmares than usual, your body might be telling you that you’re having a medical problem.  Nightmares could predict neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, various dementias or mental health issues including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.  Nightmares are a core symptom of PTSD. People struggle with processing traumatic events and so, their unconscious minds work to make sense of those events and it ends up being a nightmare.  Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia also are associated with intense dreams. Nightmares are common in people with chronic pain syndrome and sleep apnea or asthma because of the disruption of the sleep-wake cycle.  Obviously, nightmares can occur under periods of intense stress and changes in medication or diet. If nightmares are increasing in frequency, see your doctor. Help is on the way.
