Millicent Umoru LL.B, B.L, ACIS (In-view) tagged me to a link and asked for my view on a matter that was viral on Twitter with the hashtag #justiceforspongbob.
I read through the post and discovered that a fan of #spongebob had recreated a movie called SpongeBob SquarePants: Rehydrated and it was taken down from YouTube for Copyright Violations after a complaint was field by #ParamountPictures hence the outrage.
My initial thoughts were that maybe PencilWorkshop and his team were guilty of it but as I began my research on the case I got to learn a lot about the intellectual property rights in animations, a guideline for fan films, more about how YouTube takedown notice works, how best to classify the act etc
Today's #IPSERIES is a commentary on the #justiceforspongebob case with a brief comparison of the US and Nigerian copyright systems.
Did you watch any of the SpongeBob SquarePants Movies?
The movie has been restored back on YouTube and now has 1.6 million views in a month so you can check it out.
