Those who achieve a lasting things for humanity are seldom without controversy especially in the service of God and the gospel. Such is the case with Saint Junipero Serra. Saint Junipero was a Franciscan missionary who established seven missions along the California coast- hence "apostle to California". Saint Junipero was canonized on September 23rd 2015 by Pope Francis: this canonization celebrated in Washington DC was the first in the United States.
