And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will tabernacle among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them... And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God... I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. (Rev. 21:3, 10, 22)
The Bible tells the unfolding story of a Holy God dwelling with His holy people in intimate fellowship within His holy place - that is, within His temple.
The temple motif can be traced throughout Scripture in this way: God dwelt with His people in Eden; then after the Fall He graciously communed with descendants of Seth, then in the land of Canaan with the patriarchs; next, in the tabernacle; then the temple; then ultimately in the incarnation of Jesus Christ, who now dwells in His Church by His Holy Spirit and will return to dwell with His people in the fullness of His glory in the new heavens and the new earth.
