The Appeal co-hosts Neima Abdulahi and Brii Renee sit down with Atlanta’s very own DJ Holiday to discuss his rise to success, family life, and his come-up story with some of the biggest names in the hip-hop industry.
“My whole technique for getting my brand out there was to work with anybody that wanted to work with me,” he said.
DJ Holiday says he was willing to work with anyone at the early stages of his career. He said he wanted his brand to be as big as the people he looked up to.
“In the beginning, I was the DJ at a goofy bar for $100 a night. I would be happy if 15 people came.” After his bar nights, Dj Holiday would soon work with artists such as Nicki Minaj and Gucci Mane.
“I met Gucci through Zaytoven. Gucci would record his music, and I would just play it at the clubs. It’s crazy to see how big we are now.” In addition to that, Holiday would spend time in the studio with Nicki Minaj, who was just Nicki to him back then. Holiday and Nicki were crafting her early sound and were excited for the world to hear the music.
DJ Holiday also reflects on his family life, his wife and children. “She was just my best friend, and she gave me a balance in my life.” Holiday’s wife helped him become more structured, focused and help the next generation of young talents.
“Our job is to help new artists get into the industry because 10-15 years ago, I would’ve loved to meet someone like me now,” he said.
He expressed how imperative it is for new artists to have a great team surrounding them. “New artists should not have ‘yes men’ surrounding them.”
