The Appeal co-hosts Neima Abdulahi and Brii Renee sit down with Atlanta hip-hop music veteran Pastor Troy to discuss his long legacy in the industry, his controversial remarks about Lil Nas X, and how he’s influenced the rap game.

Pastor Troy also shares his back story before he pursued music as a career. He reveals that his name came from his father who was an actual pastor named Troy. As a result, little Pastor Troy grew up in a traditional church family that did not embrace hip-hop culture. Troy mentioned, “All my friends had access to the music but I could never participate.” However, once Troy attended Payne College in Augusta, Georgia he would rap in the dorms and his friends began calling him Pastor Troy.

Around age 18 Troy asked his family for their blessing as he wanted to become a full-time rapper. Troy explains that it was not easy, but they had always taught him he could do anything he put his mind to. “One thing I didn’t do was put pressure on myself, I just made the music and was happy with it.” Troy touches upon his hit song No Mo Play in GA and explains how he almost did not add the “we ready” chant in the background. “I’m so happy I did!”, exclaimed Pastor Troy to The Appeal hosts.

Pastor Troy also addresses the controversial statement about Lil Nas X. His remarks during the young artist’s Grammy performance made global headlines, sparking a conversation about LGBT rights, equality, freedom to love who you chose to love. Listen to the full interview for his response.

Lastly, Troy shares his thoughts on the future of Atlanta’s music scene. “I was probably the second major artist signed out of Atlanta, so the future is very bright for the rest.” Troy believes he was a pioneer for the adlibs we hear in the music industry now, as he stated, “These lil dudes probably don’t even know why they’re doing that.” In conclusion, Pastor Troy wants the new generations of artists to have a great lawyer, be themselves, and stay safe in the streets.
