Atlanta’s very own ‘Queen’, music executive, and dynamic female powerhouse, sits down with The Appeal Unfiltered for Episode 9 of the show’s inaugural first season.
Queen is multifaceted and has her hands in marketing, writing, A&R, and more. Initially, Queen got her start in the music industry by working with her brother Shawty Lo and her best friend Fabo.
“I came into the game very young with D4L. It’s a family, down for life,” she said.
Queen unveiled never before I won pieces of history about Atlanta’s hip-hop culture. She shared how her brother Shawty Lo did not want to finish the song “Dey Know.” However, through her A&R expertise, she made it happen. “I gave Greg Street the unfinished song and he looped it on the radio. They liked it so much that Shawty Lo was forced to finish it,” she said.
During the conversation, Queen touched upon being a woman in the music industry. “Your reputation is everything,” she said as she mentioned the mistakes women oftentimes make in the game. Queen stressed the value of having a strong female voice in any record label organization. “You can’t play chess without the Queen on the board,” she said.
As the interview continued, Queen expressed how she almost left the music industry. “After Shawty Lo died, I wanted to leave music alone.”
As she contemplated leaving the industry, it was Atlanta rapper Ralo who motivated Queen to stay in the music scene. Ralo and Queen became very close friends, and she stayed by his side even during his incarceration. “Ralo loves to give back to the community, and he is still doing it.”
Lastly, Queen reveals that she is still working on a documentary about her brother Shawty Lo. “It is taking some time because I want it done right,” she said.
