Tyler is a good friend of mine from D.C. and we had a great discussion. I tried hard not to use Tyler as an object lesson and with the idea that "My black friend is gonna educate us about being black!" Regardless of race, Tyler has great advice for anyone who wants to improve their careers and their health. That said, this interview originated was because I wrote a blog after the Ahmaud Arbery murder, and he and I got talking about and how race does affect our American lives. Tyler recognizes that he is the commander of his life choices, but he also discusses the extra hurdles African Americans have to jump because of the color of their skin, and the weight that every African American carries with them no matter how successful they get.
