Pregnancy is a life changing event, but for black women this time in their lives comes with uniquely concerning health issues and added layers of struggle. Having said, here are a few ways black women can protect their mental health during pregnancy and postpartum.
1. Prioritize emotional wellness
2. Find 5 Mental Health support resources you need, even if it is virtual.
3. Put your family on alert for symptoms to look out for.
4. Find a provider who looks like you.
5. Don't be ashamed or afraid to step forward and change your doctor
6. Remember your jeans size are not your destiny girlfriend!
7. Schedule me-time
8. Ask about culturally tailored mental health support.
9. Remember that asking for help is not a sign of weakness
10. Find a community that best represents YOU.
And lastly, return to the village mentality. In other words, have your support system by your side.
