St John Paul II highlights love as attraction which evolves into desire and which is anchored in goodwill. He notes that we are attracted to an inherent value in another person and that desire is borne of an feeling of lack which may find partial fulfillment in another. As he says, "to love is to will the good of the other", where genuine love is associated with selflessness.
