In 1849, Harriet Tubman escaped being enslaved in Maryland only to return umteen times to rescue dozens of others from enslavement. She inspired hundreds of Afro-American former slaves to join the Union army to contribute to gaining victory over Slavery. Not only was she a leader for civil and human rights, but she also campaigned for women's rights too. Harriet Tubman was an American hero who advanced social integrity to benefit all Americans.
