The phenomenon can be traced back to the 19th century but became a major catastrophe once the Sackler family in business at Purdue Pharma marketed the drugs Oxycodone and Oxycontin to treat persistent pain using surreptitious means to deceive the public into thinking they were less addictive than street heroin. Excellent discussion documenting a sad series of events we are both all too close to.
