It seems the overwhelming message our society receives about body size is that you can simply decide how big or small you want to be. Eat more = get bigger, eat less= get smaller. Yet we see that only around 10% of dieters keep the weigh off long-term. What gives?
While the simple calories in vs. calories out notion has some truth to it, there's also a lot of evidence that indicates your body has a "happy place." Set Point Theory is the idea that each individual has has a pre-determined, preferred weight range and that it can be difficult to adjust that range up or down (not impossible, but difficult). Yes, there are always exceptions, and set point can theoretically be manipulated through various factors.
Join us for a closer look at this concept. We'll review factors impacting set point, how one might approach adjusting their set point, how this impacts food relationship and why it's important for you to even know about this theory.
