In this episode we are going to explore some myths, misconceptions, and pet peeves surrounding disability and SCI.  These are our views and thoughts and do not represent the whole SCI or disability community. 

Some of the Myths & Misconceptions we address:

1.  Once you are paralyzed that's it - you'll never recover function

2.  Neurorecovery can only happen for the newly injured.

3.  Your doctor or physical therapist can predict your level of recovery

4.  Rehabilitation ends when you leave the hospital

5.  Attitude doesn't matter when it comes to rehabilitation

Some of the Pet Peeves we address:

1. The other one that drives me nuts is hearing your to young/pretty to be in a wheelchair

2. Someone just asked me this week if my husband stays home to take care of me. They always say “you must get a lot of help in order to take care of your children and clean the house.”

3. Oh another one is when people lean in real close when they talk to you. Hello person space!!! I’m not deaf. I can hear you.

4. We need help with doors and everything else we do

5. Asking me "what's wrong with you?" Before even asking my name.
