You want to paint a visual picture in your reader's mind with your words. Don't confuse your reader if you want her or him to have a clear image in their mind. Here are some mistakes to avoid when you're describing what your characters are seeing or experiencing. By avoiding these you'll be much better off painting pictures with your writing. And trust me, as a writer, you'll want to do that. Happy writing!
