For more effective stories and more vivid description, you'll need to use stronger verbs. Was is often overused. Even experienced writers overuse that word. But sometimes it doesn't really bring any meaning to the sentence, and that's why, for the sake of your story, you need stronger verbs. And trust me, you'll find those when you're editing, if not before.
