Re-Imagining  slave memory. Why now? Many of the crises that we experience in the  world today, whether it's about police brutality or racism, have more to  do with the past than the present. There is an African proverb  that illustrates this point: When the young people do not feel the  warmth of the village, they will burn it down.

Talking  about slave memory and history creates a good space to talk about  identity. This whole process will be helped forward by people who are  engaging in open, courageous conversations about their past.
