In which the Monsters join me in reviewing PRACTICAL MAGIC (1998) which is currently streaming on HBO Max. Based on the novel by Alice Hoffman and directed by Griffin Dunne, the screenplay credits for the film go to Robin Swicord, Akiva Goldsman and Adam Brooks. The film follows the Owens Sisters, Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman), who lose both their parents as a result of a centuries old family curse. They come to live with their kindly Aunts, Jet (Dianne Wiest) and Frances (Stockard Channing) on a small seaside island with some close-minded residents who aren't too keen on the witches in their midst. Time passes and Sally finds happiness in the form of Mike and they start a family. Gillian goes out into the world and goes through relationships until she meets Jimmy (Goran Visnjic) who soon shows himself to be a very scary gent. The Sisters get themselves in a bit of trouble and soon Gary (Aidan Quinn) shows up to find out what is going on and if the woman he's been searching for is actually Sally. The film has a run time of 1 h 44 m and is rated PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
