In Latin America, it’s common to hear people talk about “un buen detalle” or a nice touch. Or as we say in English - unfortunately, sometimes disparagingly - “It’s the thought that counts.”
A small gesture can make all the difference, to show someone that we care, that we’re thinking about them, that we want them to be well and share in our joys.
According to Professor Laurie Santos, director of the Science of Well-Being course at Yale, noticing when people are in need and helping them can make a huge difference in our levels of happiness in the long term.
