It’s wonderful to take the time to introspect to discover what our own hidden beliefs and expectations are. Sometimes when we improve our beliefs, there is still another simple step we can take in order to polish them further.

For example, many people spend countless hours arguing with others on the Internet. Their unspoken belief is “It is my responsibility to make sure people are correct!” or “It’s my duty to make sure people understand my point of view and see things my way!”

While we can take responsibility for our communication, ultimately we do not have control over how people see the world. So a more realistic belief is to say “It is not my responsibility to correct strangers on the Internet.” Naturally, as the belief is more realistic, it causes a lot less frustration.

However, in a sense that belief is diminishing our own power. Taking it one step further, we can say “I trust the Divinity and intelligence of others to figure things out.” With beliefs like these, we can at once affirm respect for others and for ourselves.
