Description

In this episode, we meet Emerald, a mother of two who birthed her first baby in the USA by an unplanned c-section.  She was planning on having a birth at a private birth centre with midwives and skipped the 20-week scan and at 36 weeks went in to have a quick scan to see where the placenta was.

After the scan Emerald was given the bad news that there was something wrong with the baby and that she would not be able to give birth at the birth centre. She prepared to give birth at the hospital and was induced at 41 weeks and after a cascade of interventions ended up with a C-section. It turned out that there was nothing wrong with the baby he was perfectly healthy.

Pregnant with her second baby she knew that she was going to do everything differently.

She did not see anyone during the pregnancy until 20 weeks. Not wanting to have a similar experience she had a 20-week scan and the baby looked perfectly healthy. Planning on having a home birth with a midwife but did not find a midwife that she really resonated with plans to move into a different area she wasn’t sure where she was going to be giving birth, so decided to freebirth.

Emerald went into labour on her own at home at 40 weeks and three days and had a wonderful, healing and calm birth with her daughter. Unfortunately, after waiting for 12 hours for the placenta to be birthed she did head into the hospital for a retained placenta and have a D&C and was able to go home that afternoon.

Emerald said if she had another birth she would plan another freebirth.
