Calvin Hayes met Javier Wallace when he was a football player on an athletic scholarship at Florida A&M University. The son of a Panamanian father and a Black American mother, Javier acted on a longstanding desire to go overseas when he accepted a teaching position at an American school in Panama. Knowing no Spanish on arrival, Javier used his intellectual curiosity to improve his language skills and to embrace both sides of his cultural heritage. In this episode of the HayesXChange, Javier talks about identity and the privilege of holding an American passport in global spaces. Javier is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Texas at Austin.
