In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Dr. Stacie Schmidt, a Medical Director of a primary care center in Atlanta, about the systemic racism that still exists within public healthcare. Dr. Schmidt addresses how colorism is part of systemic racism and her work with improving patient communication highlights the implicit bias in healthcare. They discuss the way to move forward is by acknowledging the truth of systemic racism and how it has affected society.
Dr. Stacie Schmidt completed her undergraduate studies at Xavier University of Louisiana, where she obtained a BS in chemistry in 2003. She completed medical school at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA in 2007, and went on to train at the Emory J. Willis Hurst Internal Medicine Residency Program. Upon completion of her residency in 2010, she joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at a quaternary care facility. Dr. Schmidt’s interests include improving care delivery in ways that empower patients to self-manage their health. She believes that effective care delivery requires patient-centered care that promotes self-efficacy, as well as enhanced communication between providers from various disciplines regarding the plan of care.
