What standards should children’s books meet when it comes to celebrating all cultures and minimizing the white gaze?
Why is it important that those standards stretch across all parts of society?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Archaa Shrivastav (she/her), an award-winning author and children’s literature expert. She discusses the importance of the Own Voices movement, which honors the importance of storytelling from one’s own lived experiences. She details standards to consider when selecting books for kids and how important it is to translate that criteria to society at large. Listen as she addresses white gaze, the downfalls of the word “diversity”, and the importance of amplifying other’s lived experiences.
Archaa (she/her) is a freelance editor, content creator, and published author dedicated to creating and curating Own Voices picture books featuring intersectional identities. As a former first grade teacher and a first generation Indian-American, she's passionate about putting identity-affirming stories in the hands of children. When she's not knee-deep in children's books, you can find her cooking vegan food, gardening, and building community in Oakland, CA.
