Description

This episode was recorded in April of 2020 (early in the pandemic) and now, almost 1 year later, we feel that the necessity of supporting Black owned businesses is more important than ever.

In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Dar'shun Kendrick, JD, MBA, a GA state representative and advocate for small businesses. Ms. Kendrick shares her knowledge and insights about barriers to access (and SBA loans) for business owned by people of color and women, how easing on social distancing restrictions too soon is one of the worst things that can be done for small businesses, and how being intentional about supporting Black businesses is one of the most important things consumers (and business leaders) can do.

Dar’shun Kendrick was born and raised in Decatur, Georgia. She has a dual degree in political science and communications from Oglethorpe University, a law degree from the University of Georgia and a Master in Business Administration from Kennesaw State. Dar’shun’s passion and focus have specifically been on making sure that minorities and women have access to the tools and resources they need to reach their capital raising goals. She is also an innovator and community activist. Dar’shun’s service extends beyond her “day job”. Since the age of 27, she has also served as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives. She represents over 54,000 Georgians in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties. She also founded Georgia’s first Technology, Innovation & Entrepreneurship Caucus which is a bipartisan caucus of Georgia legislators and stakeholders committed to the mission of supporting entrepreneurs within the state. She currently serves as the Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and a ranking member of the Small Business & Jobs Creation committee.
