Description

What advice do white people need to hear to more effectively support anti-racism movements? How can you apply personal struggles to advancing social justice?

In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Dr. Tema Okun, an author and social justice advocate. Her work titled ‘White Supremacy Culture’, laid the foundation for Jill’s Conscious Anti-Racism course, book, and live training. Tema explains how she keeps her racial justice commitment sustainable and meaningful through her determination to find joy. She describes the importance of finding your people and being supported in your community as you do this work. Tema gives advice on how white people can show up in the racial justice space and how they can learn from personal struggles and apply that to anti-racism work.

Tema Okun has spent over 30 years working with and for organizations, schools, and community-based institutions as a trainer, facilitator, and coach focused on issues of racial justice and equity. She also facilitates, consults, coaches, and consults with leaders and organizations nationwide. Tema was a member of the Educational Leadership faculty at National Louis University in Chicago and has taught undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral level students in educational leadership and education. She is the author of the award-winning The Emperor Has No Clothes: Teaching About Race and Racism to People Who Don’t Want to Know (2010, IAP) and the widely used article White Supremacy Culture.
