(This episode was recorded in June of 2020)
What do you do or say when your white child makes a comment or asks a question about race? How do you balance wanting to 'protect' your child from the horrors of racism with raising them to be open-minded, compassionate, and ready to stand up against racism? How do you talk to them about the experiences of Black children in the United States?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Yvette Brown, a white woman with two adopted African-American children. Yvette discusses her own challenges discussing race with her children, her work on the Race Conversation Project, some advice for white parents on how to answer tough questions about race, and why (and how) to start having the conversation about race immediately.
Yvette M. Brown is a white mom raising two black boys in San Francisco who one day realized that her years of nestling comfortably within the folds of white privilege were over. After immersing herself in the racial justice movement she decided it was time to do more than read and watch…it was time to act. She’s the Founder of the Awkwardness & Grace Podcast, and is
currently working on a qualitative research study with UCSF Professor Nicole Wolfe, exploring how white, black and biracial families talk with their kids about race. Yvette also works as a fine artist, exploring the themes of tension and balance in her work.
