Description

What is space activation? What is the importance of recognizing diversity within Indigenous communities? How do these communities help support their people in western culture?

In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Melody Lewis and Turquoise Devereaux, dedicated activists for Indigenous peoples' social justice and the founders of Indigenous Community Collaborative. They discuss the importance of community and connection in Indigenous cultures as a way to empower Indigenous youth. Listen how they honor the sacrifices of previous generations that has led to more opportunities now and the privilege to be able to think about wellness and self care to overcome the impact of trauma. Between their culture and the western culture, Indigenous peoples are taking actions to decolonize systems through  space activation, identity, and cultural connections to their community.

Melody is Mojave/Tewa/Hopi and an enrolled member of the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe. Melody is a social entrepreneur dedicated to serving Indigenous Communities and Individuals within the systems of workforce development, education and economic development utilizing collaborative approaches rooted in Indigenous Identity.

Turquoise Devereaux is part of the Salish and Blackfeet tribes of Montana. She received her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Montana and her Masters of Social Work at Arizona State University. Turquoise works at the intersections of direct support to students, institutional and organizational process consulting, program evaluation, training facilitation on decolonizing approaches to practice and Indigenous Social Justice.
