In what ways has the pandemic been weaponized against Asians living in America?
How has the myth of the “Model Minority” shaped experiences for those minorities?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang, the Director of Pulmonary Integrative Medicine at Coastal Pulmonary Associates and mindfulness teacher. She shares her experiences and observations of how the pandemic has been weaponized and created an increase in hate crimes against Asians in America. They discuss the importance of holding space for mindful curiosity and the personal hurt and pain that goes with racist encounters. Dr. Liang realized she could no longer remain silent and became the change she wanted to see. She highlights the beauty in diversity and owning her culture to get over her own discomfort. They take a deep dive into the historical context and present day implications of the myth of the “Model Minority” and how it permeates the life of the people from those minorities.
