What good is a healthcare system if it doesn't actually work for the people it serves? How can we be intentional about auditing the ways that systemic racism shows up in our own life, and then taking that next steps to do something about it?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Jessica Brooks, MBA, the CEO and Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Business Group on Health and the founder of the Executive Action Response Network (EARN) and The Health Desk. Jessica shares her own personal experience of systemic racism and bias in the healthcare system as a Black woman and how that has informed and inspired the work she does today to create "an accountable healthcare system that actually works for the people". Jessica embodies her own philosophy, "well-doing so we can have well-being", and she shares how important it is that we each do an intentional self-audit of how systemic racism shows up in our lives, and then take action to dismantle it.
As CEO of the Pittsburgh Business Group on Health, Jessica provides the vision to transform healthcare for PBGH employer-members. Under her leadership, PBGH has emerged as a national force aimed at improving mental health, health equity and quality for millions of lives touched by employer-based health plans. A graduate of the Pennsylvania State University and Carnegie Mellon University, Ms. Brooks serves on the board of governors for the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative, the Pennsylvania Health Insurance Exchange, and Maitri Medicinals to name a few. Ms. Brooks is the co-founder of Inspireware, a tech company designed to empower communities in well-doing. Ms. Brooks is a graduate of The Advanced Leadership Initiative – an executive leadership program for African-American executives at CMU’s Tepper School of Business.
