We welcomed Serena Connell on our show, an inspiring and upcoming artist & designer. She came on the show to help us talk about Black Hair. Serena did a wonderful illustration of why folks should not touch her hair. Especially since Serena has a lengthy process to get her hair that way. To see her illustration, you can connect with her at https://serenaconnell.com.
In addition, Serena shared her story regarding how she was discriminated against in school growing up ALL due to her hair. AND, you all already know…it was a hot topic for Tee-Ta, so yes, she went all in :)
Here are some quick takeaways:
Even though the Black hair dialogue for Black women stems from oppression ideologies -- it's too kinky, textured or bushy, Black women do take pride in their hair.
Sure. You love her hair. But why do you? Because it’s different to yours right. So rather than trying to pat her like she’s some exotic animal. ONLY Compliment her radiance.
Just because white women might be ok with touching each other’s hair doesn’t make it ok all round.
The history behind NOT touching a black woman’s hair runs deep.
‘Techy Techy stuff’ is about to be Tee-Ta’s new nickname :)
