Best of The Satin Lounge with Kia René welcomes Queer Author, Activist, and Poet RED SUMMER to Pillow Talk. She discusses How She Got Her Name, Her Lesbian Muslims Documentary #AlNisa, and The Seduction of Poetry. Enjoy this seductive and educational conversation.
If you could write a poem to confess your forbidden love or address the injustices of inequality, you may just borrow a poetry prose from Red Summer's collection. RED SUMMER is a Jane of many trades. She's a performance artist, activist, motivational speaker and published writer. Tune in as she shares her inspirational and often controversial journey in activism and education using the creative platforms of spoken word, theater, and film. Red Summer worked on her first indie film in the form of a documentary project entitled, Chasing Summer. It is a virtual shotgun ride on a personal journey that was as elaborate as Red Summer herself. Her love for poetry and music intertwined to make this experience an artistic journey, while her passion for history, travel and culture drove a spiritual mission to overcome the past and redefine the future. Through the director’s lens, a collaboration of artistic works are beautifully quilted together, to tell just a fraction of the story of The Red Summer Experience. Her second documentary project, Al Nisa – Muslim Women in Atlanta’s Gay Mecca, will begin touring in the Spring of 2013.
