Safotu is of Samoan descent and was raised in West Auckland. Safotu is a teacher and Student Dean at Onehunga High School, he is also the author of the academic paper "Pasefika Secondary School Pastoral Deans’ Narratives of Working With Pasefika Students Who Have Church Commitments"
