In the ninth episode of my third season, I am joined by the band Brigid to overthink about stepping out of your comfort zone.
We dive into:
• The benefits of the trio to help step outside your comfort zone.
• The inspiration behind the music.
• What to tell yourself when you need an extra push.
Brigid – the trio of Emma Smit-Geraghty, Beth Terry, and Sarah Glinz – bring their music to the stage with rich three-part vocal harmonies that transcend genre. Masters of storytelling and song, they draw inspiration from music icons such as Fleetwood Mac, Jann Arden, Joni Mitchell, and Carole King.
Their music touches on the many aspects of being a woman, and the joys/struggles that come along with that. They are also active in their community raising awareness and funds for charitable organizations, such as Halifax Sexual Health Centre, Colchester Sexual Assault Centre, The Lotus Centre, CALA, PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Centre, EyeBike NS & Better Together NS.
Brigid is both at home performing covers of iconic music and original music inspired by their lives and experiences. All three are proud to be musicians, music educators, mothers, wives, daughters, and women, and this comes through in their stories and songs.
Beth Terry is the mother of four outstanding humans, Creator and Director of Mini Musicians, and member of the music trio Brigid. When she isn’t teaching music at her private studio, she is organizing concert tours and events, writing songs for Brigid, or learning to play the cello. Originally from Newfoundland, Beth moved to Nova Scotia 20 years ago, and found a new home in Truro in 2005. Performing since age 5, Beth has a life long passion for the Arts, and has been working on stage, with actors, musicians, and young children in the field of music and theatre.
Emma Smit-Geraghty. A graduate of Sheridan Institute's Musical Theatre - Performance program, you may have seen Emma locally in Decoy Theatre's Marion Bridge, heard her as the voice of Sandy in Maritime Marionette's The Lonely Leprechaun, or in productions of the Vagina Monologues. Other favourite performances include Serena in Chicken Coop Theatre's Legally Blonde and the Courtesan in Shakespeare by the Sea's A Comedy of Errors. Her writing credits include composing for Collingwood, Ontario's Eco-Squad touring show, writing an original play entitled Guy of the Year (co-written with her writing partner, Iain Stewart), and early work-shopping of a cabaret entitled Lessons I Learned in Theatre School and the Ones I Wish I Had. Since arriving back in Truro in 2016, she has been teaching voice, piano, and musical theatre from her home, teaching tap, jazz, and musical theatre with the Cobequid Dance Academy, and teaching acting with Stagecoach.
