Shane Burger made his First-Class debut in the 2001/02 season for Gauteng. He captained the Gauteng side in the 2007-08 and 2009-10 seasons and led the team to the SAA Provincial One-Day Challenge title in 2007-08. Shane also represented the Lions and KwaZulu-Natal Inland. Shane’s First-Class batting average was 33.67, scoring 19 half centuries and 6 centuries. He took 171 wickets in 91 matches with an average of 24.47.
After completing his playing career with KwaZulu-Natal Inland, Shane took over the coaching role and was very successful with the team winning numerous competitions such as the Africa T20 Cup, the 3-day series and has won CSA's Coach of the Year award twice in three years.
