You follow Jesus when you fulfill the Intent of the old law by living righteous lives. We are called to have a righteous attitude, not just a check-list life.
The main point is, Jesus is King of a Radical Kingdom.
The Sermon on the Mount's main thesis (theme) is found in Matthew 5:20, “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven”
