Sarasate, virtuoso violinists of the 19th Century wrote many pieces for violin with piano or orchestra, which were popular with players as well as audiences in his day as they embodied a way of playing that he understood better than anybody else. Also, Sarasate was one of the few 19th-century virtuosos who lived into the gramophone era, and his 1904 recordings offer tantalizing evidence of his performance prowess.
