Summary of Judges 17Judges 17 tells the story of a man named Micah, from the hill country of Ephraim. Micah steals 1,100 shekels of silver from his mother, but after being cursed by her, he returns the money. His mother then uses some of the silver to make an idol, which she gives to Micah. Micah sets up a shrine in his home, complete with an ephod (a priestly garment) and household gods. He even hires a Levite priest to serve in his shrine, hoping this will bring blessings to his household. This chapter highlights the spiritual decline and idolatry that was rampant during the time of the Judges, when "everyone did what was right in his own eyes." It introduces the theme of misguided worship, where people mixed true faith with personal preference and created their own forms of religion.
