Four children survive extreme traumas and are brought together for the powerful magic they did not even know they possessed that helped them survive. Tired of the medieval setting, Tamora Pierce creates a magical world with more of a Middle Eastern inspiration, where magic is made into threads and blacksmith mages can touch red hot metals with no injury. As the children get their barring's in their new home, they learn of a mage in a far off land that is trying to disrupt the laws of nature and magic. When this explodes into a massive earthquake, it's everything the children can do to survive with their lives.
