Today on the show we have Dave Tint, Dave is a 35 year old BJJ brown belt under Chad Bingham. Dave reminds me of the people I grew up around in blue collar Sonoma County, a straight shooter, hard working, gritty, you know, the salt of the earth type. I haven't met too many non professional practitioners who study Jiu Jitsu for hours a day off the mat like we do. I think this is what makes so many of my encounters with Dave always feel like an instant connection. As you will hear in the episode Dave genuinely loves Jiu Jitsu, it's one of his defining characteristics. He is a technical and dogged practitioner who has several competitions under his belt. Dave travels to several academies to train and has an impressive network of training partners and instructors he has connected with. He's even competed in one of Jeff Glovers, undisclosed location tournaments getting his hand raised by Mr. Glover himself.
Recently Dave suffered a massive heart attack that went undetected for several hours after training one day. It's a shocking story of, mistakes, bad luck, bad decision making, and it's really a miracle that he's still alive let alone training again. When I think of Dave I think of Hunter S. Thompson, both of which lived hard, did things we wish we had the guts to do, and has a wisdom that sits right below his ostensibly rough exterior. At times this was an incredibly difficult and emotional conversation for me (and Dave), as I’m asking a good person about their own mortality to their face as respectfully as possible.
