Description

Sean Roberts is a 2nd-degree black belt who has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2005, at the young age of 15. Sean first started training at Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Placentia under black belt Brad Jackson and then black belt Eduardo Fraga. At the time Sean was competing there was very few teens his age to compete against so he was competing against adults in most tournaments and beating them, he's competed in over 200 tournaments. Sean moved to San Francisco in 2009 as a purple belt to train under Ralph Gracie. Sean started training at Ralph Gracie San Francisco under Ralph and black belt Kurt Osiander. It was during that time that Sean was selected to compete in The BJJ Kumite against 12 of the best brown belts from around the world, he came in 2nd place in the gi portion. This was shown as a reality series on YouTube, and Sean became one of the most recognized brown belts in the world. He was given his Black Belt by Ralph Gracie in March of 2013. He moved to Chino Hills to teach in September of 2013.

I try to have guests on the show who I personally feel are very important for the art of Jiu Jitsu. Today's guest Sean Roberts is no exception, he is another one of those guys who has managed to avoid the hype train of BJJ personality despite winning droves of tournaments. Why we don't speak of his name more often is really a mystery to me, but I get it, he despises social media and I get the feeling that self promotion is barely on his priority list if at all. Sean was a feared tournament competitor, he is one of the quickest effective decision makers I've witnessed on the mats. It would serve many of us to go back and study his performances, unfortunately for us he recently announced his much deserved retirement from serious competition at the ripe age of 31 to focus on his coaching at his impressive Chino, CA academy Sektor.  Fortunately for us, one can go to Sektor to learn from Sean or see his upcoming instructionals on BJJ Fanatics, his debut instructional will be on his invention, The Giggler sweep. Sean provides a ton of great insight on the episode, it was such an honor to have him on.
