Description

In this episode, we think about new ways of understanding genocide as a long-standing event, and the history of starvation as a weapon, from Armenia and Palestine. We host Dr. Elyse Semerdjian to discuss her recent article, titled “Gazafication and Genocide by Attrition in Artsakh/Nagorno Karabakh and the Occupied Palestinian Territories,” published in July 2024 in the Journal of Genocide Research.

Dr. Elyse Semerdjian is Kaloosdian Mugar Chair of Armenian Genocide Studies at the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Her work centers on the history of the Ottoman Empire and the Armenian Genocide and has largely focused on the history of Aleppo and the Ottoman Armenian community. Her research and teaching pays special attention to gender, sexuality, Muslim and non-Muslim relations and how modern warfare, sectarianism, and genocide impact society, especially women and minorities.
