Lockdown news has shook me (Rita) to my very core as I am sure it has affected so many others of you, as a result I felt called to share my experience and share with you my coping strategies incase it helps another person.
Defining reframing as a conscious decision to see a situation in a different light, changing the perception of how they see the event or situation. Often those new perspectives are more positive, more motivating, and help you cope with uncertainty. Another way to think about Reframing is as reinterpreting a difficult or stressful event by working to see it in a different way.
Coping Strategies:
1 - Cognitive reappraisal involves changing the way you think about an emotional stimulus in order to change its emotional impact on you.
2 - Positive reappraisal involves identifying positive meaning in what are in fact negative stressors, by focusing on the ‘good’ that is happening or that has happened.
3 - Cognitive restructuring involves identifying negative interpretations of an event that are unrealistic and replacing them with more realistic interpretations.
4 - Coping statements are short self-talk statements that encourage persisting with or reassessing a situation in a more positive light.
5 - Acceptance-based thinking involves becoming aware of and accepting of how one feels, without trying to change those emotions.
We also share some questions that you may want to ask yourself (as recommended in the article by Tim Jackson PhD.)
- How can I accept things I can’t control?
- How can I adapt to this?
- If I were to engage in ‘radical acceptance’ of this situation/my reaction, what would that look like and how would it feel?
- How can I create realistic expectations for myself and others?
