By this point in His ministry, the people believed Jesus to be a miracle-working itinerant rabbi, maybe even the Messiah. He certainly spoke with authority in a way that none of their other teachers did. So it makes sense that they would want His perspective on major news of the day. What we see in this text is how Jesus would take such questions and use them to not only correct people's bad theology, but most importantly to turn their attention to man's greatest need.
