One of the most frustrating things I encounter as a physical therapist is when a client/prospective client receives an imaging report (xray, MRI, CT scan) and is basically scared to move due to the "findings." There is a TON of fear mongering going on in the medical profession, for what reasons I'm still unsure. We are told never squat if you have "bone on bone" arthritis, never do crunches if you have a herniated disc, never move in ways your body was intended.
But why is this probably awful "advice?" Why might these diagnoses and reports be doing more harm to your health than anything else? Why do I, as a healthcare professional, not really give a crap if your x-ray shows anything (we are NOT talking traumatic or acute injuries here, NOR red flags)? What do x-rays actually show? What should you be mindful of when receiving these imaging results? And why do words matter SO much when we receive these?
We are talking about that and more in today's episode!
