Description
For a young artist in 1919, Kurfürstendamm was the place to be. This turbulent avenue was filled with shops, hotels and restaurants, theatres and cinemas. High society, artists and intellectuals all lived here. Berlin in the 1920's was known for freedom, tolerance, and a legendarily open sexuality. And Kurfürstendamm was the centre of it all. Women ditched ankle-long dresses and wide-brimmed hats for bob haircuts, some even kissed and held hands while walking down the street.
Walk this neighborhood with Jeanne Mammen, a painter in Berlin's Golden 20's. She was in the middle of it all and used the Kurfürstendamm as a huge atelier. Actress Meret Becker will be her voice on this Detour, and take you back in time to discover inner artist circles, wild nightlife, and revolutionary ideas about sexuality. You'll see the spot where Marlene Dietrich performed, and visit the flat of silent film star Asta Nielsen. And you'll discover why the Golden 20's shined brighter here than anywhere else in Berlin.
