While Martha gets a bad rap, here John points to her solid faith, and Jesus speaks His fifth I AM Statement to this grieving sister: I AM the Resurrection and the Life. Jesus knows going to Bethany will ultimately lead to His death, but He goes willingly to lay down His life for His friend (as He said He would in John 10). The result of this miracle brings great glory to God but also sets in motion a string of events that will eventually lead to Jesus’ death.
